Install the latest version of iTunes. Your iPod Nano will not function without it. Whether using a Mac or a PC, you can download the latest version of iTunes at the link provided in the Resources section below. If you own a Mac, iTunes will already be on your computer, but you may need to update to the newest version.

Connect your iPod Nano to your computer. The iPod will need to initially sync and be recognized by the iTunes software. Additionally, syncing with iTunes will automatically occur in the future whenever charging your Nano using the computer's power. To connect your iPod Nano to the computer, locate the white USB wire that is included within your Nano package. The plug on one end will have an Apple logo on one side and the universal USB symbol (a ray with two offshoots) on the other. The other end of the wire will have a flatter, wider plug that has a horizontal box with a line through it on one side. Plug this wider side into the bottom of the iPod Nano, and the then plug the side with the USB symbol into the USB port on your computer. This port should have a small, matching USB symbol.

Charge up your iPod Nano. When you plug your Nano into your computer using the USB port and after you have downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes, it will be necessary to leave the iPod idle while it initially receives some battery charge. It may take up to 30 minutes for a new iPod Nano to receive an adequate charge before iTunes will recognize the new device. Once the iPod is charged, it will automatically sync with iTunes and begin downloading the music from your computer and its library.

Name your iPod. Upon connecting your iPod Nano to the computer and once it is charged enough to sync, you will be allowed to name your iPod. Type in your name of choice and click "OK."

Disconnect your iPod and get going. To use your iPod out in the wild, you will have to disconnect it from your computer following syncing and setup. It is best however not to just unplug your iPod. Instead, in iTunes navigate to the side bar. Where it lists your iPod, click the small eject button just beside (it looks like an up arrow). Then, carefully unplug your iPod Nano from the USB plug.
