How to Become a Dump Truck Driver

Found This Helpful

There are a number of different opportunities for people who enjoy driving and want to make a career out of it. While some gravitate towards a position as over-the-road semi drivers, others find they can satisfy their desire to be behind the wheel by learning how to become dump truck drivers.

  1. Earn your CDL. A CDL is a commercial driver's license, and you must have this to drive a dump truck. Apply for it and take a written and driving exam through your local driver's license office. Often they have the driving tests available one Saturday each month. For those with no experience or knowledge of driving larger vehicles, taking a one- or two-day class is highly recommended as this helps prepare you for both exams.

  2. Attend heavy equipment operator training. One of the fastest and safest ways to learn how to operate heavy equipment such as a dump truck is to attend a training program or school that specializes in heavy equipment. Organizations such as the National Heavy Equipment Operators School provide the training you need to find employment as a dump truck driver in your area. You can also learn how to operate other equipment used on a construction site, which makes you a valuable asset to any company.

  3. Learn on the job. If you don't have the opportunity to attend a training program, you can still learn to be a dump truck driver through on-the-job training. Some companies will hire individuals with no experience. These companies provide training of their own.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most companies require dump truck drivers to pass a background check and drug screen since they have to get insurance to cover you and them while you're driving.
  • You should have a clean driving record or companies may not want to hire you.
