After months of use, the automatic transmission fluid becomes filled with metal, moisture, fiber and other contaminants. These particles accelerate wear of transmission internal parts, making oil changes necessary at regular intervals. Following these steps will help you change the transmission fluid. The procedure applies to the 2002 Chevy Cavalier, which is similar to other models.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Floor jack and 2 jack stands Ratchet and socket set Screwdriver Shop rag Transmission filter Gasket sealer Transmission oil
  1. Step 1

Park your car in a safe place with a level surface.

  2. Step 2

Lift the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and safely support it on jack stands.

  3. Step 3

Place a drain pan under the transaxle oil pan and remove the bolts from the sides and front of the transmission oil pan using a ratchet and socket.

  4. Step 4

Turn the bolts loose at the rear of the oil pan about three turns. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the oil pan open at the front to begin draining the transmission oil into the drain pan. Carefully hold the oil pan with a shop rag from underneath as you remove the rear bolts. Carefully lower the pan and drain the remaining oil.

  5. Step 5

Remove the filter from underside the transmission. On some models, you have to unscrew the filter using a regular screwdriver, while other filters can be detached from their mounting base with a screwdriver.

  6. Step 6

Remove the oil pan gasket and thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the oil pan and underside the transmission mounting base.

  7. Step 7

Place the new gasket on the clean oil pan, securing it with gasket sealer. Follow the sealer manufacturer instructions closely.

  8. Step 8

Install a new transmission filter. Lift the oil pan carefully with your hand and set it against its mounting base on the transmission. Install the pan bolts finger tight.

  9. Step 9

Tighten the oil pan bolts with the ratchet and socket in a crisscross pattern. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  10. Step 10

Lower the vehicle and fill the transmission with the car manufacturer recommended oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult your car owner's manual to fill your transmission with the right amount of oil for your particular vehicle model. You can also ask your auto parts sales person for this information.
  • Warming up the engine and transmission prior to changing the oil will help to purge the transmission from loose particles. If you decide to follow this procedure, be extra careful as the engine, transmission and transmission oil will be very hot and severe skin burns may result.
