How to Make a Bridal Veil Pattern

How to Make a Bridal Veil Pattern thumbnail
A bridal veil is something you can make yourself.

If you're planning a wedding, you know how costly it can be to get married. From flowers to tuxes, candles and caterers, everything you need is going to be overpriced, and you're only going to use it for a couple of hours. Fortunately, there are a few things you can easily make on your own, without spending a fortune. The bridal veil is one of these items. Veils have been popular at weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, a bride wore a flowing veil to hide her from evil spirits that might try to kidnap her. You may not have to worry about evil spirits these days, but veils still remain one of the most popular and expensive items on your bridal shopping list. If you have a little bit of sewing skill, you can assemble your own. You don't need a pattern at all; just a length of high-quality tulle or netting and some craft supplies. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 yards of 45-inch tulle or netting
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Hair comb or tiara
  • Needle and thread
  • Ribbon, flowers or other notions

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the tulle or netting in half. About 4 inches from the fold, sew across the entire length of the tulle in a gathering stitch. Once you reach the opposite end, pull the stitching tight, creating a gather at the 4-inch mark. This will give you a double-thickness veil a little over 3 feet 6 inches in length.

    • 2

Attach the veil to a hair comb. If you prefer, you can use a tiara instead. For a shorter bride, the tiara will add a bit of height to your ensemble. Although you can use hot glue to attach the tulle to the comb, it's not recommended because it can damage the fragile tulle. Instead, use a needle and thread. Attach the veil, at the gathers, to the inside of the comb or tiara.

    • 3

Cut a length of ribbon to trim the bottom of the veil. Attaching this will give some weight to the veil so it will fall properly. Hand sew this in place. You can use your sewing machine to attach the ribbon to the bottom, but be careful, because the needle can get snagged in the tulle and tear it.

    • 4

Add flowers, seed pearls or other notions. Again, stitch these in place by hand, if at all possible.

    • 5

Put on the veil to check the fit. Adjust the comb or tiara as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer a fluffier veil, use 4 yards of fabric and fold it into quarters rather than halves.

  • Be sure that your veil will fit over your wedding hairstyle. When you get your hair done for your wedding, take the veil with you.

  • Tulle snags easily, so be gentle when handling it.
