How to Install Memory Sticks in a Computer
One of the quickest and cheapest ways to increase the speed of a computer is to install additional random access memory, or RAM. RAM comes in small memory chips or "sticks," which can be installed by plugging them directly into a computer's motherboard. RAM does not require any additional software or drivers to work, so the process of installing RAM only requires hardware installation.

Turn off your computer.

Open your computer case. Most often opening the case will require a Phillips head screwdriver. Once it is open, lay it down so that you can fully view the motherboard.

Find the memory slots and take out old memory sticks. The RAM slots will look like parallel slots, usually aligned in the case vertically. Each slot will have two clips, one on either side. Pushing down on both clips at the same time will eject any memory sticks currently installed, and open the slot, making it ready for installation of a new stick.

Install the new memory sticks. Position the memory stick above the open slot and push down firmly, until it sinks down into the slot, and the clips move inward, clamping it in place.

Close your computer and turn it on. The new memory sticks should be recognized and used automatically.

Before buying new RAM sticks to install in your computer, make certain that your computer can use that type of RAM. Your computer's user manual or tech support at the website of your computer manufacturer should be able to tell you what type of RAM your motherboard can handle.
