White onions are a variety of dry onions. They are characterized by their dry, papery skin on the outside and their juicy flesh on the inside. Dry onions have varying levels of flavors. White onions are among the more mildly flavored onions. To maintain an onion's freshness and flavor, it should be stored properly. Different methods should be used for storing cut and uncut onions.

    Storing Uncut White Onions

  1. Step 1

Purchase onions without any soft spots. Soft spots are a sign that the onion is already near the end of its freshness.

  2. Step 2

Find a dry place to store the onion. Humidity causes white onions to spoil at a faster rate.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the temperature of the storage area is cool. Uncut onions should not be refrigerated, but they should be stored at temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

  4. Step 4

Store uncut white onions in these conditions for up to two months.

  5. Storing Cut White Onions

  6. Step 1

Cut a piece of plastic wrap large enough to wrap the entire piece of cut white onion.

  7. Step 2

Place the cut side of the onion on the plastic wrap.

  8. Step 3

Wrap the plastic wrap tightly around the entire piece of white onion.

  9. Step 4

Place the tightly wrapped cut white onion in the refrigerator in the vegetable bin.

  10. Step 5

Store the cut white onion in the refrigerator for up to four days.
