There's nothing like some extra memory to speed up the performance of a laptop computer. Extra Random Access Memory (RAM) is relatively inexpensive and a surefire performance boost to any system. Laptops can sometimes present a challenge when installing extra RAM, but for most Acers, there is at least one easily accessible memory compartment on the bottom of the computer. While Acers do generally have a RAM slot under the keyboard as well, it's best to start by using the easy-to-access compartment on the underside of the computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Extra RAM chip Screwdriver (Phillips- or flat-head)
  1. Step 1

Unplug the computer from AC power if connected, and remove the battery.

Locate the memory compartment and remove the panel that's covering it. Different computers may vary slightly, but the memory access panel should be a rectangular one with screws holding it in. Upon opening it, you will either see an existing RAM chip or an empty slot.

  3. Step 3

Remove the existing RAM chip (if you are replacing it) by pulling apart the spring clips on either side to release the chip. The chip will pop up; pull it out gently.

  4. Step 4
Inser the RAM at a 45-degree angle

Insert the new RAM into the slot at a 45-degree angle until you feel it seated firmly in place.

  5. Step 5
Two silver springs with clips, one on each side, should hold the RAM in place.

Press down on the RAM lightly but firmly. The two silver clips on either side of the chip should snap into place.

  6. Step 6

Replace the memory compartment panel and replace the screws.

  7. Step 7

Turn on the computer. As the computer boots up, you should see the amount of memory in the BIOS. If not, go to the "Start" menu and right-click on "My Computer." Under the General tab, you will see the amount of RAM installed. If the new memory is not showing up, repeat the steps and make sure the RAM chip is firmly in place.
