How to Make a Hanging Plant Basket

Hanging plants create a rich lush feel to any home. Whether hung from the edge of a deck or patio to enhance a sitting area or hung from a tree branch in your yard, hanging baskets extend your gardening area. Filled with cascading blooms of brightly colored flowers, these baskets will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your yard. When planted with fragrant blooms, summer breezes waft the delicate scent through the air. Making your own hanging baskets from household objects is quick and easy to do.

• Container (pot, bucket, crate) S hooks/ coat hanger Pliers Drill Nail Hammer Rope (chain, wire, etc.) Plant hanger (optional)

1. Select a container for the plants. You may choose to use standard plant pots, buckets, baskets or any type of storage bin. Even a discarded paint can makes a wonderful hanging basket once it has been given a coat of paint.

2. Make three evenly spaced holes around the rim of the container that are large enough to accommodate the size of the rope you will use to hang the basket. Although you can easily drill holes in plastic or wooden pots, you may need to use a nail to puncture a hole in a metal container. You may want more than three holes if the container is large or heavy.

3. Insert metal S hooks through the holes. You can purchase S hooks in the hardware store in a wide range of sizes or make them yourself by using pliers to bend a section of coat hanger into an S shape.

4. Attach decorative rope, clothesline or a small chain to the hook. Be sure to cut all pieces of rope to the same length. Tie all three ropes together at the top. Insert a large S hook through the ropes at the knot and hang from a pant hanger or slip over a tree branch to create a hanging basket.
