How to Make Your Own Over the Hill Gifts

  1. Step 1

Write a poem to celebrate someone's passage over the proverbial hill. Depending on their personality, you may choose to write a sentimental poem or a funny poem. For a sentimental poem, try to include monumental events that have marked the passage of recent years of the birthday man's life. You could include events such as his birth, wedding day, his children's births and his retirement. For a funny poem, you may want to incorporate memorable embarrassing events and funny stories. You also may want to use a rhyme such as, "Oh how nifty, he made it to 50!"

  2. Step 2

Create a collage of pictures in a large frame. Try to include one picture from each year of the birthday man's life and arrange them in order in the frame. This may take a little leg work and time, so plan ahead to ask people for pictures and do so secretively so it is a surprise. You may want to add a phrase to the collage by using letter stickers. It could say something like: "Joe through the years."

  3. Step 3

Make a T-shirt. You could have a T-shirt screen-printed for an over-the-hill gift. It could say something such as: "Watch out world, Joe is over the hill!" You could also have a picture of the birthday man printed on the T-shirt. Most malls have kiosks where they screen-print T-shirts while you wait.

  4. Step 4

Create a caricature of the birthday man. You could have a funny scene created of the birthday man trying to climb up a giant hill or resting exhausted on the other side of a hill to represent that he is over the hill. Make sure you add a saying such as: "Marty is over the hill," and include the date. For an extra touch, have the caricature framed at a store such as Michael's so it can be hung on a wall.

  5. Step 5

Put together a gift basket to mark the occasion. You could create a funny basket and include items such as adult diapers, denture cleaners and hair loss shampoo if the birthday man has a good sense of humor.
