Things You'll Need:

  • Deer feed with minerals (but without salt) Salt
  1. Step 1

Learn the laws in your state surrounding making available salt mixed with feed. Some states do not let you place this mix on the ground; while others prohibit it during hunting season.

  2. Step 2

Start with a combination of 4 parts of deer feed to 1 part of deer salt. Deer need salt, and they are attracted to it in their feed.

  3. Step 3

Place the feed mixture in a feeding trough that is located off the ground. This will prevent sand, soil and grit from wearing at the teeth of the deer.

  4. Step 4

Observe the feeding habits of the deer over the course of several weeks. If the deer seem to not be attracted to the mixture, increase the proportion of salt. Try next 2 parts of feed to 1 part of salt. Then try equal proportions. If the deer come and eat the mixture but then leave, the deer think it is bitter. This is because there is too high of a proportion of salt in the mix. Go back down a step, until a balance is achieved.
