  1. How to Fix Vinyl Siding

    • 1

Insert a zip tool up under the bottom edge of vinyl siding. The edge of all vinyl siding is shaped like a "J," so slide the zip tool along this edging and pull down very slightly, keeping in mind that this can at first present a problem. Keep pulling until you can wedge the edge so that it overlaps another piece. This will give you the necessary room you need to fix the problem.

    • 2

Cut through the siding that needs to be fixed from the bottom edge through the nailing strip. If possible remove enough of the siding that there are least two different studs into which the replacement piece can be nailed. Remove the nails and the damaged section of siding.

    • 3

Cut a replacement section that is around 4 inches longer than the piece that was replaced. Cut away the nailing strip 2 inches from both ends. You want the nailing strip to fit as precisely as possible into the area where the original siding was, while also allowing the siding to overlap the existing siding by those 2 inches.

    • 4

Place the replacement siding so that you can drive the nails into the nailing strip. This may present a problem because the strip is edged up under the overlapping section. Wedge the overlapping section upward a slight amount and place a roofing nail in the nailing strip. Position the end of a pry bar over the nail and hit the pry bar with the hammer rather than the nail itself. This will actually facilitate the process of driving the nail in. Use the zip tool to lock the edge in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not drive the nails in all the way, those slots in the nailing strip are designed to let siding expand and contract.
