A digital camera can be a huge time-saver for photographers. There is no need to change film in the camera or get it developed The picture images are saved onto a memory file, which can then be transferred to your computer and printed yourself. Details like focusing can also be much simpler. Once you know how to view your photos on the camera and transfer them onto your computer's hard drive, working a digital camera can be even easier than operating your old film-based one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the camera has fresh batteries (it may take a customized rechargeable battery or standard AA batteries) and a memory card installed. The memory card is needed to store the photo images. Check the compartment for each of these; they may be in the same location, especially on the smaller models.

  2. Step 2

Press the power button on the camera. Make sure the camera is set for the lens to view. Set the switch in the back to the setting with the camera drawing on it.

  3. Step 3

Focus the camera lens. Many cameras have multiple focusing methods but use a default autofocus that is activated by lightly pressing the shutter button. To get the best picture, switch to manual focus and center on one object in your window. This is often done via a cursor button on the camera.

  4. Step 4

Press the shutter button to take a picture. If you want to use the timer, press the button with a clock on it beforehand. Once the picture has been taken, turn the switch from the lens to the "View" option (it should look like a square with an arrow in it) to view the picture. If you have multiple pictures stored, use the directional buttons to view them one by one.

  5. Step 5

Connect the camera to a computer to upload your pictures. (The camera should come with a USB cable that will connect it to the computer.) This should activate whichever photo album program is installed on your operating system. This program will have an "Upload" or "Import" command that will transfer the photos to a folder in the program.

  6. Step 6

Delete the photos from your memory stick by going to the "View" screen and pressing the button with a trash can on it. You will likely be asked to confirm this request. This will free up space on the memory stick. Make sure you know how many photos you can store on your memory stick.
