How to Water a Lemon Tree

Citrus trees, like the lemon tree, come in all sorts of varieties. Watering a lemon tree has to be done properly in order for the tree to thrive and give fruit. Many times we don't have the time or the patience to stand with the water hose to water the trees, so here are a few ideas to help get the job done without taking too much time.

Things You'll Need

• Sprinklers or emitters Soil basin Fertilizer Metal bar or wooden pick

Instructions

1. Install a sprinkler system or drip emitters under the tree.

2. Turn on the sprinklers or emitters until the dirt is wet at least 3 to 4 feet deep.

3. Check the dirt for water penetration by sticking a metal bar or a wooden pick. This is just like checking the oil of a car. If the bar or pick does not show moisture as it should, then keep watering.

4. Water the lemon tree when the soil is dry, at least 6 to 8 inches below. Remember that most lemon trees need to be watered at least every 8 to 12 days during the summer months. If the weather is cooler or it rains, water it less often.

5. A soil basin placed around the tree (just outside the canopy of leaves) can also be used to water a lemon tree. Just fill the basin with water and let it drain. Make sure the dirt is wet at least 3 to 4 feet deep as stated previously. Repeat if necessary.

6. Fertilize the lemon tree every four to six weeks or at least once a month, from February to August, for a better harvest as lemon trees need both watering and feeding to prosper.

7. As the tree grows, add more sprinklers or make the soil basin wider.

Tips & Warnings

• The lemon tree needs to be in well drained soil. Choose the proper lemon variety depending on the state in which you live and the weather the state endures.

• Too much watering will rot the roots of the lemon tree. Do not plant the lemon tree in low lying areas.
