In most states, you have to change your address on your driver's license within 10 days after a move. Finding out how to change a driver's license address may be a little confusing for some people. Actually, there are various ways to change an address on your driver's license, which you will find easy to do. Even if you live far away from your local DMV, you will have at least one way to change your address without traveling. However, if you need a new license when changing your address, you will have to visit your local DMV.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Current driver's license Social Security number
  1. Step 1

Change your current driver's license address online. Most DMV's have a website that allows you to change your address. Go to your local DMV website and click on "Change address." This will take you to another page that gives you a list of options for changing your address. Click on the appropriate box for changing your address online.

  2. Step 2

Enter your driver's license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number and your date of birth. It is important that you enter everything correctly or the site will reject your application to change your address. After you fill in this information, click the "Submit" button.

  3. Step 3

Follow the steps on the next page to change your address. You need to enter your old address with city, state and zip code, and your new address with city, state and zip code. Then it will instruct you to click "Submit" to finish. After you submit the form, you will receive a paper card in the mail that has your new address on it.

  4. Step 4

Attach the paper copy to your current driver's license on the back when you receive it in the mail. This will need to stay there until you renew your license or apply for a duplicate with the DMV local office.

  5. Step 5

Call your local DMV office and change your address on the phone if you don't want to do so online. The information you need will be the same as you need for changing the address online. After you supply the information, the officer will confirm that your address has been changed. Some states have automated phone lines for this process.

  6. Step 6

Mail your change of address form to your state DMV. This will require visiting the DMV website and printing the form out on your printer. After you fill in the information, send it out in the mail.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your state may not send out a paper address card for the back of your driver's license. Every state has a different requirement. Some just require that you change the address and nothing more. Some states may charge a small fee for updating your driver's license. Make sure to have a credit card or debt card handy.
  • When you are filling out the form, make sure that you enter all the numbers correctly.
