Once you understand the basic stitches, you can make this extremely simple afghan.

With your hook, make a chain consisting of 120 stitches or chain links.
Working from the 5th stitch from hook, make a single stitch and in each chain across to the end, chain 3 and turn.
You will have 115 stitches. -

Make a double crochet in each stitch across, chain 3 and turn.

Repeat step 2 until the afghan reaches approximately 4 feet. Tie your thread off.
Try to keep your stitches even so the afghan will not pull in one direction. -

This is an extremely simple pattern. Purchasing a pattern book or going online will give you a multitude of patterns to choose from.
This pattern is basically a beginner pattern only, in order to get yourself familiar with the feel of the hook and the yarn. -

Tips & Warnings
You can add fringe to each end of your afghan by cutting six 6-inch lengths, folding in half and attaching to each end stitch of the afghan with a half knot. You can also make a border around the afghan with a single stitch in each stitch and make 2 rounds. Create a rainbow effect by using a different color for each row. For this you would tie off each row before starting the next.
