How to Decorate With Glass Blocks

Glass block, originally designed for use as small, sturdy windows, became an important Art Deco design element in the 1920s and then again in 1950s and 1960s architecture. Since about 1985 decorating with glass block has come back into fashion. Installation is straightforward, and it's easy to add glass block to existing designs. Mortar and pre-fabricated framing are the most common methods of installation.

1. 

   Use a floor to ceiling frosted glass block wall to create privacy without losing light in a studio apartment. The wall needn't be longer than 4 or 5 feet. You could also use a stepped design in place of a solid wall.

2. 

   Replace existing windows with glass block. This is a job that can be done by a moderately skilled do-it-yourselfer.

3. Divide a large room by building a half wall between open spaces. This suggests separate living areas without making the room seem smaller. Use this method to separate an entryway from the living room.

4. 

   Put strands of fiber optic lights inside hollow glass block. Use the lighted blocks as individual decorative pieces or as accents in a wall.

5. 

   Make floors more interesting by either creating solid glass block areas or using blocks as accents.

6. 

   Enclose your shower stall with glass block to let light into the enclosure while making a design statement.

7. 

   Use glass block as pavers in outdoor walkways. Glass block can also be used outdoors to enclose a patio area or porch, or to define a garden area.

• Use different colored glass blocks to create interesting designs or a stained glass effect.

• Don't replace a load bearing wall with glass block.
