Glass block, originally designed for use as small, sturdy windows, became an important Art Deco design element in the 1920s and then again in 1950s and 1960s architecture. Since about 1985 decorating with glass block has come back into fashion. Installation is straightforward, and it's easy to add glass block to existing designs.       Use a floor to ceiling frosted glass block wall to create privacy without losing light in a studio apartment. The wall needn't be longer than 4 or 5 feet. You could also use a stepped design in place of a solid wall.

      Replace existing windows with glass block. This is a job that can be done by a moderately skilled do-it-yourselfer.

      Divide a large room by building a half wall between open spaces. This suggests separate living areas without making the room seem smaller. Use this method to separate an entryway from the living room.
