How to Write a Force Field Analysis
For any change initiative to be successful, the forces that are driving change must be stronger than the forces resisting it. Force Field Analysis, or FFA, is a tool used in change management and project management to evaluate the forces for and against change. The tool itself is simple, but the power comes from identifying the driving forces and the forces of resistance, then creating a plan for enhancing the driving forces and countering the resistance. An FFA diagram can be created with pen and paper, or using computer software for a more formal version.

Summarize the change that is being evaluated in one phrase and write that phrase in the middle of the page. You may want to highlight it with a rectangular border.

Using brainstorming and interview techniques, create a list of forces that are driving the intended change and a list of those resisting the change. Include factors such as time, money, use of human resources, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction and sustainability.

List the driving forces vertically to the left of the change description along with an estimate of their strength on a scale from 1-to-10.

List the forces against the change vertically to the right of the change description along with an estimate of their strength on a scale from 1-to-10.

At the bottom of the page add up the strength ratings for the driving forces on the left. Do the same for the resisting forces on the right.

If the number on the left is substantially higher, the climate is definitely appropriate for change. If the numbers are close or the number on the right is higher, determine which driving forces can be strengthened and which resisting forces can be countered. Create a plan to strengthen the driving forces and weaken the resisting forces.

Once you have implemented the plan, re-create the FFA diagram with updated information and evaluate it as before.

Repeat the previous two steps until the strength of the forces for change exceeds the strength of the forces against change. Once this is the case, you are ready to proceed with your change initiative.
