For many people, making a simple web page is easy. It's the promotion aspect that makes having a web page hard to maintain. Your web page will be nothing more than your own small spot on the Internet if no one knows you're there. Through use of some very inexpensive but effective methods, you can get your web page known to millions of Internet surfers. It's all a matter of how you promote and get your voice heard online.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Submit your site to search engines. Search engines are programs that simply track down sites with words that you designate as search terms. Examples of some of these search engines are Google, OrangeSubmit, Submit Express and Yahoo! Search. See the Tips section below for how to submit to some of these search engines.

  2. Step 2

Promote in directories that have similar interests. Is your page for business? Sports? Tourism? This is very important because you don't want your web page about dogs appearing in a forum or directory about cats. Another idea is to find directories that match your interests and if possible find those that are directed towards your city or county.

  3. Step 3

Market yourself. Along with watching television, another habitual pastime is sending emails. While many do it hundreds of times a day, promoting your website with a small line at the end of each email in your signature could also help. It would look something like this:
    -----------------
    NAME
    CONTACT INFORMATION
    YOUR WEB PAGE
    "SLOGAN (IF YOU HAVE ONE)"
    -------------------
When people look to return email messages they will always have an option of calling, emailing you or just visiting your website in their free time. Another way to promote your web page is through printing your site on everything you give out, from business cards to pencils.

  4. Step 4

Exchange advertising with area businesses. For those who run local web pages, getting the community involved in your web page can be a sure path to popularity. Identify some local businesses and offer them free advertising on your site. In return, ask them if you can place some business cards in their store on a bulletin board, or at their cashier's counter. You can go the extra mile and even offer to do a little promoting of their business in exchange for the exposure. A picture is worth a thousand words, and when consumers are told to go to your site for more information on a business event, that generates buzz.

  5. Step 5

Exchange links. If you're an Internet surfer with connections, then exchanging links with popular sites can increase views for yours. Once you've identified web pages that are similar in nature to yours, see if they have a program that allows for you to exchange links with them. Most of the time websites have html code already assembled that you can paste into your web page editor in exchange for them placing your page on theirs. As a reminder, make sure to keep up with who you exchange links with so that you know who's still keeping up their side of the bargain.
