Your computer can be a new tool to help you create scrapbooks or photo albums. Online services offer an array of options to design the layout and add text for a professional-looking finished product. With a digital camera and a scanner, you can add in both photos and images of personal documents, as in a scrapbook. These albums can be family keepsakes for years to come.

  1. Step 1

Decide on a theme for your photo album/scrapbook. A broad theme, such as "my family," may be hard to narrow down. Start with a theme that includes at least 80 images.

  2. Step 2

Select the photos and documents that fit that theme. Pick photos that are high-contrast and show the subject well. Choose documents that support your photos. For instance, if you have photos of a concert, the concert tickets would be a nice addition.

  3. Step 3

Scan in the documents at a high resolution, at least 300 dpi (dots per inch).

  4. Step 4

Write some text to accompany your photos. Think about ways you can tie your photos and documents together with your theme. Poems, quotes or other witty phrases may help.

  5. Step 5

Choose an online photo book publisher. Blurb.com, Picaboo.com and MyPublisher.com all offer services to design and publish online. Compare the types of templates and the prices to find which best fits your needs and budget.

  6. Step 6

Design your book. Using the online service you chose, upload your photos and scanned images and place them on each page, along with your text.

  7. Step 7

Proof your book. Once you have completed your design, look it over carefully. After you agree to print it, you cannot make changes. Have someone else take a look at it before approving it for printing.

  8. Step 8

Have your book printed. Once it arrives, you will have a one-of-a-kind copy of something that is more than the sum of the photos, documents and text. It tells a story. Your story.
