Things You'll Need:
- Resume paper Printer
-
Step 1
Develop a professional objective for the job that you are seeking. Be as specific as possible, but don't be afraid to alter this objective to suit the individual positions you are applying to fill if it makes sense to do so. Use key words and industry buzz words to help recruitment software programs select your resume for the "yes" pile.
-
Step 2
Head the resume with your vital statistics of name, address and telephone numbers, including your cell phone number and an email address. For an analyst, you should also cite which programs and computers you have worked with by name. If you have special Unix-based skills or you designed animation software, include this on the resume near the top under the heading of specialized skills and experience.
-
Step 3
Utilize headings. If you have been involved primarily in project work--for example, as a systems analyst, working for a number of different companies--use a heading to show who you worked for or who issued your paychecks. If each assignment was generated by your initiative in obtaining new projects to work on, you essentially were self-employed, whether or not you were legally incorporated as a business entity. List that you were self-employed and highlight the longer-term projects under a subheading in chronological order.
-
Step 4
List separately the projects or assignments in which you worked at a particular employer for time frames that could be measured in years. Be aware that the employer who is perusing your resume will try to account for your time in terms of number of years. Make it clear where you worked from year to year as much as possible by using a chronological format, from most recent to earliest work.
-
Step 5
After listing your assignments, focus on any achievements, special commendation, recommendations and the like. Highlight these within the project job listing. Or if it makes more sense, set up a section called Additional Information, where you can reveal recommendations, feedback from your customers and other highlights. This should be near the end of the document.
-
Step 6
After your job detail, include your educational achievements, current activities and highlights of specialized training applicable to your career. If you graduated with honors or distinction, say so. This is the right time to boast about your achievements. Providing some customization to each resume you send--if you are aware that you have a particular skill the company needs or have worked with a certain system it uses--will be worth the extra time and attention to detail. Focus on keywords that will help put your resume over the top.
