How to Become a Mediator in Virginia
Mediators in the state of Virginia are charged with helping individuals resolve conflicts about personal property, rental agreements, divorce arrangements and custody agreements. To become a mediator, the state requires a bachelor's degree or comparable experience. Also, candidates will need to attend training that can last from 20 to 40 hours. The length of training will depend on the specialty the individual chooses.

Understand the minimum requirements. The state of Virginia requires individuals to hold a bachelor's degree to become a certified mediator. However, if you have work experience or life experience in the area of mediation, you can request a waiver form. The state recommends that individuals get approval on the waiver before entering a training program.

Consider getting your General District Court Certification, which qualifies you to mediate civil cases such as contract issues, personal injuries or landlord disputes. This certification requires a minimum of 20 hours of basic training in mediation, plus hands-on experience with a certified mentor.

Consider getting your Circuit Court Civil Certification. This certification allows professionals to mediate circuit court cases; it requires completion of 20 hours of basic mediation training.

Get your certification to mediate Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court issues. This requires 20 hours of basic mediation training plus 20 hours of family specific training. There will be an additional 8 hours of training specifically on mediating domestic abuse cases. Once you have completed the training, you can mediate cases such as custody issues and divorce.

Print and submit your application. Once you determine which type of mediation training you want to enroll in, complete an application online application (see Resources) for the appropriate course. All mediation training is facilitated through the state of Virginia.
