How to Format a Smart Media Card

Smart Media Cards were developed by Toshiba as an early form of flash-based solid state memory. Like tiny floppy disks, these cards found a lot of use as a storage device for portable electronics like digital cameras. Typically, it is best to attempt to format Smart Media Cards with whatever device you use them, but if that isn't possible, follow the steps below to format a Smart Media Card using your computer.

• Smart Media Card Reader

Instructions

1. Download a Smart Media Format utility like SMPREP (see Resources below). This utility may be included with the drivers for your Smart Media Reader.

2. Plug your Smart Media Reader into the computer and insert the Smart Media Card you wish to format.

3. Start the SMPREP utility and select the card you want to format.

4. Click format to format the card. This will take several minutes; the larger the card, the longer it will take.
