If you are painting, wallpapering or replacing your towel rack, then you need to remove the existing towel rack. Although there are many types of towel racks, the most common consist of a hanging rod that is held fastened to a wall using two support mounts. Sometimes the rack might contain more than one rod, but it doesn't matter; almost every towel rod can be removed the same way, it is just a matter of finding the support screws.

Look at the support mounts of the towel rack for the screws that are securing it to the wall. If they are visible, move to Step 3.

  2. Step 2
If you can't see the screws, look for a small screw holding the wall plate in place.

If the screws are not visible, they are covered by a wall plate. Look at the bottom of the support mounts for a small screw that is securing the wall plate in place. Loosen the screw with a screwdriver and remove the wall plate.

  3. Step 3

Remove the screws from one of the support mounts and set them aside. Once one of the support mounts has been removed, you may be able to remove the rod that goes in between them. Remember, to loosen screws you turn to the left--righty-tighty, lefty-loosy, as the saying goes.

  4. Step 4

Remove the screws from the other support mount.
