Choose your fabric. For the purposes of these instructions, larger print fabrics in cotton work best. You will need to purchase 1/2 yard print fabric and 1/2 yard muslin or other fabric for the inside of the handbag. Also purchase thin batting in the smallest size available, thread and quilting thread. Wash and dry all fabrics to allow for shrinkage before starting the project. Press the fabric.

Cut two pieces of the cotton print fabric, two pieces of the lining fabric and two pieces of the batting, 9-inches long and 8-inches wide. Make a quilt sandwich by placing one piece of batting down first, then the one piece of inside fabric (right side up) and then one piece of the outside fabric on top (wrong side up). Pin all along the outside edges. Sew a 1/2-inch seam all the way around, leaving a 6-inch opening on one side. Repeat the process with the remaining materials. Turn the quilt sandwiches right side out. Hand sew the opening on each bag piece shut.

Quilt both handbag pieces by stitching around the print design in the fabric with quilting thread. Place the two pieces together with the outside fabrics facing. Sew a 1/4-inch seam all around, but leaving the top 8-inch side open. Turn the bag right side out.

Cut two strips of the outside fabric 16 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide for the handles. Fold and press the two short ends (1/4 inch) under to the wrong side of the fabric. Press both strips in half lengthwise. On each strip, open the long strips and bring the raw edges to the center fold and press. Refold the center crease and sew all the way around along the edge of the fabric. Pin the ends of the handles 1 1/2 inches in from the seam, one handle to each side of the bag. Stitch all the way around the top of the bag, giving it a top stitch while sewing down the handles.
