Vet techs, also referred to as veterinary technicians, play an important role in a veterinary hospital or clinical setting. They perform various clinical duties such as conducting laboratory tests or giving shots and provide support for veterinarians. If you would like to enter this high demand field, but your schedule doesn't permit you to attend classes, there are a few online vet tech programs. Read on to learn how to become a vet tech online.

  1. Step 1

    Look at the list of distance vet tech programs on the American Veterinary Medical Association website. The AVMA is the association that accredits vet tech programs in the United States. Some of the distance programs mainly offer online classes, while other programs conduct classes via video conferencing or use other types of technology to deliver instruction.

  2. Step 2

    Consider applying to the online veterinary technician program at San Juan College. The online program consists of four semesters of courses in medical terminology, anatomy, animal care, pharmacology, anesthesia and imaging. The program awards an Associate of Applied Science Degree and is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Expect to complete a semester-long internship at a veterinary clinic or hospital in your area. The San Juan College online vet tech program is known for its low tuition rates.

  3. Step 3

    Apply to the online vet tech program at Purdue University. Applicants can earn an Associate of Science degree in veterinary technology. The degree can takes anywhere from two to four years to complete, depending on how fast the student completes the required coursework. The student must be employed in a veterinary office in order to complete the clinical requirements of the program. The program is also accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

  4. Step 4

    Complete all online coursework and internships that your online vet tech program requires and register for the Veterinary Technician National Exam, offered at testing sites throughout the United States. Pass the test to become a certified veterinary technician.
