How to Burn AVI Movies

AVI is a preferred format for digital movies because of its size, quality, and compatibility with several video programs. If AVI files are burned directly to DVD though, they will not play in most DVD players. Thus, they must be rendered and placed into DVD burning software in order to properly convert and function as a DVD. There are several burning options, but the quickest and most direct way is to use one of these programs: WinAVI and Nero Burning Rom.

  1. Step 1

    Open the WinAVI program. If you do not own this program you can try a free trial at its official website. It is a great investment if you convert and burn a lot of video files. It is fast and easy to learn.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the large "DVD" button. This means that you are choosing to convert video files to DVD data files. A browser window will load asking you which file you want to convert. Find the AVI movie on your hard drive and click "OK."

  3. Step 3

    Select the "Output Directory" by clicking the "Browse" button to the right of the box. The easiest location to find the files is the desktop or "My Documents," but you should choose the best output is easiest for you.

  4. Step 4

    Select the "Output Format." The standard selection is DVD; this will burn the movie the fastest.

  5. Step 5

    Click "OK" to start the conversion process. The data will should a progress bar and estimated time remaining for the conversion. A typical 90 minute movie may take 30 minutes to fully convert to the DVD format.

  6. Step 6

    Open Nero Burning Rom when the program has finished converting the files. Choose the option that says "Burn DVD-Video Files". A new window will pop up offering two folders. Double-click on the Video_TS folder.

  7. Step 7

    Drag all of the contents from the "Video_TS" folder that was converted from your AVI video. Make sure you place all of the files here, or the DVD may not work properly.

  8. Step 8

    Click "Burn," select your DVD burning options, and let the process begin. Typical burning can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on how fast your DVD burner is.
