The pump in your hot tub is used for circulating the water through the jets. There are different sizes and powers of pumps; they come in single or dual speed designs. The size and type that is required depends on the size of your tub and the number of jets. The more jets you have, the larger your pump should be. They are attached with pressure couplings for the water and can be connected with little effort.
If you are replacing an existing pump, be sure that you get the exact component that came on your tub, to ensure compatibility. Most parts have a manufacturer's name and model number on a plate attached to the pump.
Your hot tub may have two pumps. One is a small 1/4 or 1/2 horsepower circulating pump that runs all the time keeping your tub clean. It also keeps the tub from freezing in cold weather. The other pump is for jet operation. The more jets you have, the more horsepower your pump needs. No matter the size, each pump is connected the same.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Shut off valves and pumps

Shut off the power to the tub and close the water cut-off valves, then drain the tub.

  2. Step 2
    Control Unit connections

Examine the electrical connections on your control unit to make sure your pump or pumps will attach properly. Each connection is different for each accessory. The primary pump has one type of connection, the secondary pump another and the blower yet another. Make sure you have the right connection for the pump you are attaching. The electrical connection for the pump must match your control unit.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the pump by unplugging it from the control unit.

  4. Step 4
    Water connections

Remove the water inlet and outlet connections. If your tub is old, these may need to be replaced as well. These connectors are available at a spa supply store.

  5. Step 5

Be sure to double-check all connections before turning on any power to the tub.

  8. Step 8

Watch for leaks as you refill the tub. When it is full, turn on the pump.
Now you can enjoy your hot tub.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wiring from the house to the pump will not change, as the pump is controlled through the control unit. If you want to switch your tub from 110 volts to 220 volts, that requires a change to your control box.
