Whether you are about to go on a vacation to a sunny location, a pool party is on the horizon or you are in the mood for a little pampering, tanning is the way to get you looking bronze and beautiful. Tanning beds are very popular and have many advantages over sunbathing.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tanning lotion
  1. Step 1

Choose a tanning salon that has a good reputation. You can do this by word of mouth or by finding reviews online. You will also want to visit the salon in person to check out the prices, the salon cleanliness, the professionalism of the employees, and the hours they are open. These are important factors in deciding the right salon for you.

  2. Step 2

Once you have settled on a tanning salon, choose a time to visit the salon for your first tanning session. You should be clean and exfoliated, with a lotion or oil the salon employee suggested. Different skin tones means everyone tans at different rates. The salon employee should give you a good time estimate of how long to lie in the bed. This is normally preset at the front counter, so all you have to do is lie in the bed until it automatically turns off for you.

  3. Step 3

Lock the door and put your things together so you don't forget anything when you leave. Undress to your comfort level. This may mean undressing down to a bathing suit, to your underwear or going completely nude. Read the instructions on the back of your tanning lotion for proper application. Apply the lotion to all areas that will be exposed in the tanning bed.

  4. Step 4

Either push the start button on the wall, or lie down in the already running bed, resting your head on the pillow provided. If you are in a standing stall, you will need to step inside and hold up your arms. If lying down, pull the top of the bed down over as close to being shut as you can stand. Wear the eye goggles provided. They sit on top of your nose and cover your eyelids.

  5. Step 5

After the tanning bed shuts off, stand up and use the towel provided to wipe off any excess sweat or lotion. Some salons offer sprays, after-tanning lotions or deodorant after you are finished tanning. Leave the towel and eyewear on the bed. Dress yourself, checking for redness or rashes on your skin. If something like this occurs, be sure to tell the salon employee so they can reset your timing for your next session. You also may be allergic to the lotion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find a reputable salon that offers a clean and professional atmosphere.
  • Wear the protective eyewear the salon provides. Use only the lotion recommended for tanning beds. Do not tan too long nor too much. Listen and talk with the salon employee about your tanning experiences.
