How to Write a Press Release for a Band

When a band is looking to promote itself, a press release is an inexpensive and far reaching advertising vehicle. A well-written band press release could grab the attention of music industry professionals, newspapers, news shows, magazines and fans. The main goal is to write a story that is strong enough to compel someone from the mainstream media to write about the band in an article or news story.

Instructions

    • 1

Interview the band to gather the following details: the genre and musical style (i.e. punk, alternative, pop, rap), names of each band member, one quote from each band member and the date of the band's next show or event. Ask each band member to tell you a unique story about his past that inspired him to make music.

Decide on the title of the press release, which will also be your angle (the twist of the article that will grab the media's attention). If the story about how the band got together is particularly compelling, focus on that as you write. Even if it is only one band member's story that stands out, you may want to write the press release with a focus on that band member's angle and then talk more generally about the band as a whole later. In the subtitle, make a short reference to both the angle of the release and the band's upcoming event, concert or album. For example, "Even though every member of the Red Oysters grew up in orphanages, they managed to overcome their adversities and find each other. Tonight, they make their debut at Madison Square Garden."

    • 3

In the beginning of the press release you want to write a witty yet complimentary comment about the band that incorporates the angle somehow. Be creative here--the first couple of lines of the release are very important because they hook and draw in the reader to read more.

    • 4

In the next couple of paragraphs identify the band by name (both the band name and individual names) and talk about their musical style. Write about the story that you choose for your angle and elaborate as you see fit without going off on tangents; stay on topic. Briefly mention the band's upcoming project or concert and how enthusiastic the members are about the event.

    • 5

Throw in a couple of the most profound and interesting quotes from the band members.

    • 6

End your release by summarizing the goals of the band and again talk about the band's upcoming album or concert. Be sure to add specific details, such as the location, time and where fans can get tickets or the album.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your press release around 400 words. When you submit the release using a press release service (see "Resources"), be sure to add a professional photo of the band and a link to the band's website.
