Electronic underground dog fences are an excellent way to keep a curious and energetic pet within the boundaries of your yard. While there are many companies that will install fencing for a fee, these are often very costly. In reality, the job of connecting an electronic underground pet fence is a relatively easy task. An afternoon of hard work is all it takes to give your dog the freedom he needs while keeping him close to home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric dog fence kit Wire nuts Shovel Spray paint Graph paper Pencil
  1. Step 1

Using graph paper, draw your home and property layout. Determine where you want to locate the fence wire by drawing it onto your layout. You will also need to select the location for the transmitter box for the kit. This must be in moisture free location such as a garage.

  2. Step 2

Use spray paint to mark a stripe that will represent your electronic fence line. This will indicate the area of the grass you will need to dig up.

  3. Step 3

Using a shovel, dig a small trench 3 to 4 inches deep and 2 to 3 inches wide in the area marked on the grass.

  4. Step 4

Affix transmitter box in selected location. Make sure it is near a power source, as the box must be plugged in to operate.

  5. Step 5

Uncoil wire (typically 20 gauge) from your fence kit. Connect one end of the wire into the transmitter box. Lay wire into the trench that was dug in your yard.

  6. Step 6

When all the wire is placed into the trench, you will see a second receptacle on the transmitter box in which to connect the wire. The purpose of this is to create a loop of electric current running through the entire length of wire.

  7. Step 7

Using the dirt that was dug from the trenches, backfill over the wires. Firmly pack the soil into the trench.

  8. Step 8

Use the training program accompanying your pet fence to acclimate your dog to the fence.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a pavement or concrete driveway, you will need to saw through it if the wire is going to go over this area. If you run out of wire, use another roll and connect the wires together using a wire nut or solder. To alleviate mud, you might want to plant grass seed over the trench, however, the grass will naturally fill in over time. Before you backfill the trench, test the circuit to make sure it is connected properly. Most kits have a circuit test system that will beep if it is broken.
  • Before you dig, contact your local utility company to ensure you will not be digging into any power lines or underground cables. Keep the transmitter box unplugged until both wires are inserted into box.
