Choosing Paint Colors for House

More home owners are turning to siding and other exterior options for ease of maintenance, but even these materials need painting. Today there are a variety of vinyl siding colors to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Choosing colors for your house doesn't have to be difficult, however, if you follow a few guidelines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Choosing Paint Colors for House

    • 1

Make your house blend in with the rest of the neighborhood. You don't want your house to stick out from the rest of the houses on the street. Take note of the colors others have chosen and try to find one that will blend in well but that isn't the same color as the other homes. If they have neutral tones consider a lighter or darker shade for your own home. If you do not have neighbors, you won't have to worry about blending in and will have a broader option of colors from which to choose.

    • 2

Consider your current home accents. If your house has shutters or different color trim around the windows and doors, you will want to choose a color that coordinates with them. If this isn't possible or you would rather not do this, consider choosing two different colors for your house and use one color on the trim and shutters.

Incorporate the porch into the color choosing process. If your house has a porch it will either be painted or natural wood. Either way, you want to make sure it will blend in with the color you choose for your home. You could also consider painting your porch as well if this would make your project easier. If it is natural wood, you could consider resurfacing the natural wood and coating the porch with protective sealant. This will help make it look like a new porch and go well with your newly painted house.

Take other buildings around the home into consideration. If you have a garage or barn that is not attached to the house, you might consider what it will look like beside your newly painted house. Depending on your budget you could repaint any buildings you have around the home as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider using software that will let you use an image of your home while giving you the opportunity to change colors and try them out. This way you can get a better idea of what colors would look the best when covering the entire house. Small swatches of color can be harder to choose from.
