Step 1
Choose fabrics according to the quilt design you desire. A four patch quilt block is just that--four patches. The design is decided by the way you place your fabric selections. If you would like an all-over patchwork look, use many different fabrics and colors. Another way to get the patchwork feel but the look of a more sophisticated quilt is to choose many fabrics containing just two or three colors. To get a connecting diamond look, choose just two fabrics. One should be very light and the other dark. Then you would alternate them so that the first patch is dark, the second light. And, on the second row the first patch is light and the second one is dark.

Step 2
Wash and dry all your fabrics together to allow any shrinkage to take place. Then press your fabric before cutting. Cut out a template of a 4½ by 4½-inch square on poster board and cut it out. Decide on the size of your quilt. Each square will be 8 by 8 inches when it's completed. By tracing around the square template on the back of your fabric and cutting it out, you will have one square of your four square quilt block. Trace and cut as many squares as you need.

Step 3
Sew together the first two squares of your four patch quilt block using a ¼-inch seam. Sew the bottom two squares together. Press both seams, the same way, toward the darker of the two fabrics. Now, sew the top two squares and the bottom two squares together in a straight line with a ¼-inch seam. Press the middle seam down. You have created your first four patch quilt square. To continue with your quilt make enough four patch quilt squares for the width of your quilt. Then sew them together in a strip that will go across the top of your quilt. Continue making strips and then sew the strips together one after the next toward the length of the quilt.
