How to Connect a DVD Player to a VCR

People who have both VHS tapes and DVDs must eventually confront the problem of deciding whether to hook up a VCR or a DVD player to their television set. One solution is to hook up the VCR to the television to play VHS tapes, then disconnect the VCR and connect the DVD player to the television to play DVDs. However, a VCR and a DVD can actually be connected together to allow a user to play the preferred format without disconnecting and reconnecting components. Follow the steps below the connect a DVD player to a VCR.

Things You'll Need:

  • Television VCR DVD player Two additional coaxial cables
  1. Step 1

    Connect the television coaxial cable from the wall or cable box into the VCR. There are two threaded jacks located on the back of the VCR. One jack is labeled "in" and the other is labeled "out." The coaxial cable from the wall attaches to the "In" jack on the back of the VCR. To attach the cable, gently press the pin at the end of the cable into the center of the jack, then turn the end of the cable in a clockwise direction.

  2. Step 2

    Connect a second coaxial cable into the jack on the back of the VCR labeled "out" in the same manner used to connect the cable in Step 1.

  3. Step 3

    Connect the free end of the cable used in Step 2 to the "in" jack on the back of the DVD player.

  4. Step 4

    Connect a third coaxial cable to the "out" jack on the back of the DVD player.

  5. Step 5

    Connect the free end of the coaxial cable used in Step 4 to the jack on the back of the television set.
