How to Clean a Featherbed

How to Clean a Featherbed thumbnail
Clean with care

The featherbed was once a monstrously large creation that served in place of a mattress. Today, the featherbed is most commonly placed on top of a mattress to provide soft comfort in addition to the support of the mattress. The featherbed is much smaller than its ancestor and therefore can be turned and cleaned much easier. A properly cared for featherbed can last for years before it begins to break down. Cleaning the featherbed is an important part of proper maintenance. Professional dry cleaning of a featherbed is often recommended, although cleaning at home can be performed on occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Protect the featherbed with a featherbed cover. Although this step is often skipped it is the most important. A featherbed cover will extend the life of the bed and protect it from potentially disastrous spills.

    • 2

Clean any spots visible on the bed with a damp cloth, using the least amount of water possible. Excess water could cause the featherbed to mold or mildew. If a cleaner must be used, dilute the cleaner in a small amount of water before applying it to the bed.

    • 3

Wash the bed in a large capacity washer on cold. Do not use harsh chemicals or cleaners on a featherbed. Use the delicate cycle and turn the bed during the rinse cycle to ensure that all detergent is rinsed sufficiently.

    • 4

Place the clean featherbed in the dry on tumble. Remove the bed and rearrange it every 20 minutes to make sure that the bed is dried completely. Do not dry the bed on a high heat setting as it might increase the tendency for the bed to shrink or create other damage.

    • 5

Allow the bed to air out on each side for several hours before using it or placing sheets on it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Air a featherbed out routinely between cleanings by fluffing and turning the bed. Examine the featherbed for any tears or holes and repair damage accordingly prior to any cleaning. Launder your featherbed cover regularly per the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Read the care instructions on the label of the featherbed prior to performing any cleaning or care.
