How to Open a Combination Sentry Safethumbnail
Small home safes protect your valuables, but don't forget the digital combination for it.

A combination Sentry safe is usually made out of steel and is sometimes fire-resistant, offering your valuables protection against both thieves and fire. However, it's only of use to you if you know how to open it. There are several options for the person trying to open the combination Sentry safe.

Use the combination to the safe, provided you still have the combination. On a combination Sentry keypad safe, enter the * key, then your combination, then the # button. Other types of combination Sentry keypad safes require you to enter the combination and then hit a green button.

Dial the combination on the combination Sentry dial safe. Start with the 0 on the knob at the line on the safe. Turn the knob around at least twice to the right. Stop on the first number in the combination. Turn the knob around twice to the left and stop at the second number in the combination. Turn the knob around once to the right and land on the final number to the combination. Turn the handle on your combination Sentry dial safe and the safe opens.

Use the safety key that came with your combination Sentry safe. If the combination Sentry safe is a modern safe, it comes with a safety key. Pull off the keypad or dial on the combination Sentry safe by depressing the plastic or metal part around the safe. There is a place where the safety key can be placed to open the safe. Put the key in the key hole, turn it and pull the safe door open.

Mail or fax Sentry to request the combination to your dial safe. You need to provide Sentry with some information like your name, address and phone number. You also will need to produce the model number and the serial number for the safe, located on the lower right hand corner of the front door. Sentry then gives you the combination to the dial safe. This step only works if you are the original purchaser of the safe and if you are the one who registered the safe with Sentry. (Locate the fax number and mailing address for Sentry in a link in the Resources section.)

    Tips & Warnings

    • Take a large axe to your combination Sentry safe, if the other steps have not worked and if you desperately need to get inside. Set the safe outside in a wide open area and slam the axe down onto the safe. Be sure you are wearing protective gear like safety goggles, as there may be flying parts.
