1
Think about the overall design you would like to use for your hoodie. Lay out any patches you want to use, or make a sketch of your plan.
-
2
Attach patches. Fold patch edges under a little for the neatest look (and the most durable attachment). Thread a needle, pull the thread until the ends are even, and knot them together for a strong double thread. Make small stitches through the folded edge of the patch and the hoodie fabric, all the way around the patch. Tie the thread off securely and cut close to the fabric.

3
Paint designs on the hoodie using fabric paint, acrylics or spray paint. Use stencils cut from butcher paper, regular paper or cardboard if you'd rather not paint freehand.
-
4
Iron the hoodie when the paint is dry. This will flatten the patches and set the paint somewhat, which helps make custom hoodies stand up to hard wear and machine washing.
-
5
Add metal studs if you like. These studs, a common hoodie accessory, are available from leather supply stores. Attach them by cutting tiny holes in the hoodie, slipping the tabs or posts of the studs through, then folding the tabs or screwing on a base.

Tips & Warnings
Another way to make custom hoodies is with decorative sewing. Embroider designs on your hoodie using embroidery floss, or sew additions like cat ears or a hood lining. These modifications, of course, require more sewing skills than those mentioned above, but they can produce very striking results.
Keep in mind that customized hoodies may not stand up to washing as well as standard hoodies, particularly if they are studded. Use a gentle cycle or wash by hand if you really want to preserve your custom hoodie.
