How to Properly Lift a Plasma TV

A big screen plasma TV can be a great centerpiece for a entertainment center, but when it comes time to move, it can become a big hassle. Not only does the weight of a large TV make them strenuous to carry, but the awkward, elongated shape makes it dangerous to attempt alone. Therefore, certain preparations and ergonomically sound lifting techniques should be employed to safely lift and move a plasma TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the path between the TV and where it is going to be moved. The last thing you want is to have the heavy TV lifted and discover a footstool or other objects in your path that might cause you to lose your balance if you try to kick it aside.

    • 2

Prepare a space to set the TV back down at its destination ahead of time. Similar to step one, you should have a place to set your TV down once it gets to where it needs to be, be it a sturdy table, TV stand or the padded floor of a moving truck.

    • 3

Position yourself on one side of the TV, and your friend on the opposite side, so that the full width of the screen is between you. You may both want to wear work gloves, to reduce pressure on your hands when lifting.

    • 4

Bend at the knees while keeping your back straight up and down and placing one hand below the bottom of the screen to exert pressure upward and the other behind the screen for balance and support. (Both lifters should do this simultaneously.) If the TV is very heavy, you may need to lock both hands under the bottom of the TV for extra lifting strength. If this is the case, having a third person on hand to steady the TV if it wobbles is a good idea.

    • 5

Stand up, unbending your knees, while keeping your back straight, lifting the TV up with the strength in your legs and holding it in place with the strength of the arms. (Again both lifters should do this simultaneously)

    • 6

Cautiously move the TV to its destination. One person will have to walk forward and the other backward to pass through doorways and other cramped areas.

    • 7

Position the TV over the spot that you prepared for it, then bend at the knees, using the strength of the legs to slowly lower the TV. You may want to set the TV down on the count of three, so that both you and your lifting partner bear equal weight, and so that the TV is set down evenly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are moving the TV a long distance, you may want to prepare a place to set it down somewhere in the middle to rest and regain your strength.

  • The key to safely lifting a heavy object is to never bend at the waist and lift with the back. Always lift with the legs and arms.
