How to Find an Old Friend on the Internet

  1. Step 1

Gather all of the information you know about the person in question. At the very least, you will need a name, but the more information you have, the easier your hunt will be.

  2. Step 2

Perform an Internet search for the person. To do this, simply type in his or her name into a search engine using quotes (example "John Doe").

  3. Step 3

Search on social-network sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. If you're searching for a woman, many of these sites allow you to search by maiden name (in case her name has changed since you last spoke with her).

  4. Step 4

Check out Classmates.com or Reunion.com for former classmates. If you went to school with the individual, this may be your best source for information.

  5. Step 5

Use a free email directory to search for the person's email address. Although there may be multiple results, you can often narrow the information down according to location -- or just send multiple emails until you find the right one.

  6. Step 6

Search public records. Even if you are unsure of the person's current residence, you can often find information by searching in the area where he or she formerly lived.

  7. Step 7

Consider using a people lookup service. Peoplelookup.com provides basic information such as a person's name, relatives and previous residences. If the information appears relevant, you can then purchase a report with the person's exact details (such as email address, phone number and address) for about $10.
