Step 1
Install or update the latest version of the TurboTax software. This can be done over the web, or done via a CD if you purchased the software at a retail store.
-
Step 2
Gather all of your relevant tax information, including W-2s, 1099s, money made from savings or checking account interest, brokerage statement forms, receipts and other relevant records.
-
Step 3
Enter all relevant personal information and pay extra attention to each of the questions. This is to help determine the deductions in which you qualify to maximize your potential return.
-
Step 4
Carefully enter all of your financial data into the TurboTax software as directed. Make sure to double-check each handmade entry so the data is correct.
-
Step 5
Review the entire tax return by using the "Preview Returns" menu prior to e-filing or printing your tax return. This is to avoid any transcription errors or filing an incorrect tax return.
-
Step 6
File your taxes online. Or if you prefer, print your tax returns to send them by mail.
-
Step 7
Make backup copies of your tax returns. It is recommended to keep an electronic copy on your computer or removable hard drive, as well as a minimum of one paper copy. It is better to be safe than sorry.
-
Step 8
Verify that your tax returns has been accepted or received by the IRS and your state revenue department. If filing online, TurboTax has a "Verification Status" menu which states if your tax returns have been accepted, pending, or rejected by the software program. If submitting paper copies by mail, you can choose to send your returns via certified mail.
