VNC, or Virtual Network Computing, allows you to remotely log in to any computer with VNC installed. Unlike Remote Desktop, VNC allows both the remote and current user to see the desktop at the same time. This utility is most often used for tech support. Some users use VNC for remote meetings. Multiple users can log on to a given computer to view a presentation or live demo. The biggest complaint is a slight delay on some actions but overall, VNC is an extremely powerful and useful tool.

From Quick Guide: Remote Software Manual
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install the VNC client on all computers you may need to connect to, as well as your own.

  2. Step 2

Choose a password for each installation. You can use the same password or a different password for each.

  3. Step 3

Right click the icon in the notification tray, double-click the icon on your desktop, or go through the "Start" menu to start the VNC viewer.

  4. Step 4

Type in the IP address or computer name of the desired computer in the Computer Name or Machine field.

  5. Step 5

Type in the correct password of the computer. Click "Connect."

  6. Step 6

Look for the computer's desktop. Depending on the setup, you will either see the computer's desktop or will need to wait for the user to accept or reject the connection. The desktop will appear in a separate window. The desktop of the remote computer works as though you were sitting at the computer yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create a spreadsheet with IP addresses, computer names and passwords.
  • If you lose a password, you'll have to uninstall and reinstall VNC. Never let the VNC passwords be common knowledge. Use a secure password or set of passwords to prevent anyone from guessing the password.
