A boutonniere is a finishing touch for a man's clothing. They are worn at weddings, parties, proms and special occasions, and they can be made from fresh flowers or silk. The most popular boutonnieres are roses and carnations. Wedding groomsmen can wear freesia stems, baby's breath or flowers that match those of the bridesmaids. You can easily make your own boutonnieres for any occasion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh or silk flower Small piece of leatherleaf or other greenery Florist wire Floral tape Shears or knife Wire cutters
  1. Step 1

Cut the stem on the flower to a 4-inch length. Skip Steps 2 through 4 if using a silk flower.

  2. Step 2

Cut two 6-inch pieces of florist wire.

  3. Step 3

Push the florist wire through the receptacle (the bulky part of a real flower, where the flower attaches to the stem). Push the second wire in on the opposite side so they are crossing in the center of the receptacle.

  4. Step 4

Bend the wires down to the sides of the stem. Wrap one wire around the stem and the other wire twice. Wrap with floral tape.

  5. Step 5

Hold the greenery or leaf at the back of the silk or real flower with the stem pointing down. Wrap both stems with floral tape to bind them together completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Baby's breath or another filler flower can be added to a boutonniere. Attach it with the greenery piece with floral tape. A boutonniere is always pinned on with the stem pointing down.
  • Be sure all wire is covered with floral tape to prevent scratches and torn clothing.
