Microsoft Outlook Express is the lightweight and faster version of its heavy-duty counterpart, Microsoft Outlook. An easy-to-use desktop mail client, Outlook Express provides a streamlined interface that allows users to simply manage and organize email, while providing a built-in backup system for important correspondence. Outlook Express also has numerous customization tools that help to make your emails more personal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather the information you need to setup an email address in Outlook Express. You can find out this information by consulting the help section of your web-based mail account (like Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail) or by directly contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You will need to determine the type of email server you use (POP3, HTTP, or IMAP), the names of the incoming and outgoing (SMTP) servers, your email account name and password, and whether or not Secure Password Administration (SPA) is required to access your email account.

  2. Step 2

Open Outlook Express. Go to "Tools" in the navigation menu and select "Accounts." Click "Add" then "Mail." Outlook Express will immediately begin the Internet Connection Wizard.

  3. Step 3

Type your name in the "Your Name" field. This will be the name that your recipients see when they receive an email from you. You can use a nickname if you wish. Click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Enter your email address in the "Internet Explorer Address" page. Click the "Next" button.

  5. Step 5

Enter the information you gathered about your email account into the "Email Server Names" page. Click "Next."

  6. Step 6

Enter your email account name and password. If you leave the "Remember password" check box selected, anyone can open Outlook Express and access your email. Leave the box deselected if you are concerned about security. Outlook Express will then prompt you for your account password each time you send and receive mail.

  7. Step 7

    Click "Next" and then "Finish."

Tips & Warnings
  • Test your email setup by sending a message to a friend or family member. Check out the extensive support section in Outlook Express to find more ways to organize and manage your email.
