How to Freeze a Decorated Cake
Many people choose to save the top tier of their wedding cake or leftover slices from a celebration. Preserving a cake in the freezer ensures that it will be safe to eat and fairly tasty when the time comes to consume it. While freezing a decorated cake is a simple process, there are a few things worth noting before doing it. The cake will not taste or look as fresh after it has been frozen. The condensation can cause the icing colors to run and the cold air can dry the cake out. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Refrigerate the cake overnight to firm up the icing and decorations.
-
2
Wrap the chilled cake in a layer of plastic wrap, making sure that every inch of the cake is covered. Then, repeat the process with a layer of foil.
-
-
3
Slide the foil-wrapped cake into a gallon-sized freezer bag. Seal the bag almost entirely, leaving a small opening. Slide the tip of a straw into the bag and suck as much air as possible out of the bag. Seal the bag.
-
4
Place the bagged cake into a large plastic container. Stuff the areas around the cake with newspaper to keep it from shifting while in the freezer. Put the lid on the container.
-
5
Store the cake in the freezer. Make sure that the container is sitting flat and straight and that the cake cannot shift around on its shelf. To thaw the cake, remove it from the container, bag and foil, and place the plastic-wrapped cake in the refrigerator for a couple of days.

Tips & Warnings
This method is not recommended for cakes that haven't been served. For example, while it's fine for leftover wedding cake, a cake for an upcoming party or event shouldn't be frozen after being decorated. The cake will look and taste different after it's thawed.
