How to Make a String Instrument

String instruments run the gamut from the simplicity of single-string musical bows to the complexity of concert pianos. They can be picked, plucked, strummed, bowed and even played by the wind. Despite all this diversity, they all work on the same principle. A string or wire is stretched between two points a certain distance apart. By changing the distance between the points or adjusting the tension, the string can be made to play any pitch desired.

Instructions

1. 

   Cut a tone hole in the top of a cigar box. It should be several inches wide and can be any shape. The wider you make it, the brighter the tone will be. A smaller hole will make for a darker, warmer sound.

2. 

   Put nails or tacks into the top and bottom of the instrument for each string you want. The top nail and the bottom nail should align vertically so that the strings go straight over the tone hole.

3. Cut the eraser off an unsharpened pencil with a small saw or craft knife. Glue the pencil about an inch in from one side of the box.

4. 

   Tie lengths of fishing string between the top and bottom pins. Vary the tightness of the different strings to get different tones.

5. Pluck the strings to play the instrument.
