How to Make Bath Curtains

Making your own bath curtains adds an original touch to your bath. Cover windows in smaller bathrooms with less dramatic styles. Larger bathrooms can support drapes with tie-backs and valances. Bathrooms are humid, so bath curtains need to be able to resist mildew. Creativity will make bath curtains a focal point of the room, rather than an afterthought. Does this Spark an idea?

      Shower Curtain Hooks

Buy two vinyl shower curtains with the same pattern or color and two sets of fancy shower curtain hooks. Use curtain one for the tub. Cut the other curtain to fit your window and hang with the shower curtain hooks. Make sure you leave the top intact so you can hang it. Vinyl won't unravel around the edges like fabric, so you don't have to sew a hem.

Cut a piece of fabric the length of the inside dimension of your window. For a pleated effect, cut it wider than it is long. Make seams at the top and the bottom that a curtain rod will fit through. Finish the sides. Use two tension rods, one at the bottom and one at the top to stretch the curtain inside the window frame. This creates an illusion of space in a small bathroom.

Use decorative window film cut to fit your window. Glass brick, stained glass and floral patterns add drama to the room. Frosted window film provides more privacy. There's no adhesive used in its application, so it's easy to do and easy to change.

Buy untreated canvas at your art supply store or fabric store. Use waterproof paints to create a sunny beach scene. There's no need to paint the entire piece of canvas---think of a sun in one corner, and sand and shells at the bottom. Hang with cafe rings, or sew a seam at the top and slip over a curtain rod.

Hang matching towels from cafe rings on a straight rod. Use towels that match your existing set or complement your décor. No sewing is required and you can toss them into the washer with the rest of the towels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shutters and blinds also work well. Don't use real wood because of the humidity in the room.
