Instructions

    • 1

Measure how thick your door is before making your purchase. While the majority of homes will have doors that are 1-3/8 inches thick, some may be 1-3/4 inches. It is important to choose a doorknob kit that is designed to the correct measurements or else it won't operate correctly.

    • 2

Consider what type of door lock would best suit your needs. Families with young children or elderly members may want to choose lever-style locks instead of knobs. Levers are much easier to operate for those with small hands, arthritis or similar conditions.

    • 3

Use your hands to pry away the trim pieces on either side of the door. These are the round metal sections that cover the lock's inner mechanism. They are sometimes held in place with screws, but are more commonly just fitted into place.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the knobs into place. Once you've done this, grasp one knob in each hand and slowly pull them off the door.

    • 5

Unscrew the fastener holding the latch bolt in place. There is typically only one, and once it is removed, you will be able to remove the locking mechanism.

    • 6

Place the new lock into the opening. In homes where the front door swings out of the house, the slanted portion of the bolt should face into the house. The opposite is true for inward-swinging doors.

    • 7

Insert the screw into the appropriate hole in the bolt and secure it in place.

    • 8

Screw the knobs into place on either side of the door. Tighten each side a bit at a time so that they come together properly.

    • 9

Install trim rings or covers by sliding them into place. Depending on the lock you chose, they may have to be screwed in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider a front door lock as an investment into your family's safety. Don't choose a lock simply because it's the lowest priced model available. Look for a unit that is solid, sturdy and will offer years of protection to your home and family.
