Constructing Railroad Ties Steps

Measure the width of the ties, they should be standard and all the same length. These steps are designed for a slope, so pick the right location in your yard to place your steps.

Get your shovel and dig a space the length of the railroad tie so you can place the tie into the ground by about 2 inches.

Measure from the first railroad tie back 2 feet. Make this area level and check with your bubble level.

Place the second railroad tie 2 feet back from the first tie. Dig the railroad tie into the ground by 2 inches.

Level the area above the second railroad tie 2 feet back and place your third tie into the ground by 2 inches. Gravel can be placed on your steps to prevent mud, or plant a ground cover.

The steps can be as wide as you need for you available space.
Railroad are usually treated with tar or creosote, so wear gloves. They can also be heavy, so be careful lifting.
