How to Remove Stains From Linoleum

Linoleum flooring is made of natural materials including linseed oil and cork dust. It's durable and water resistant, and it doesn't take much to keep it clean. But, like any flooring, it can get marked and stained with everything from fingernail polish to shoe scuffs. Here are some tips for cleaning things up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use lighter fluid to clean up black scuff marks, finger polish stains, ink and more. Dampen a paper towel with some lighter fluid. Rub gently on the stain. Wipe off with a clean paper towel.

    • 2

Make a paste of baking soda and water to remove newsprint stains and other blemishes. Apply the paste to the problem area with a sponge or cloth. Let it sit an hour or more. Scrub it in, and rinse clean.

    • 3

Wet a clean rag with a solution of about 2 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar. Rub onto a stain; let it sit about 20 minutes; wipe it clean. If needed, repeat and dust baking soda over the vinegar solution. This is effective on a variety of stains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean linoleum on a regular basis by vacuuming it and mopping with warm soapy water. Some people like to add a cup of vinegar to the mop water to keep the linoleum shiny. Don't scrub with abrasive cleansers.

  • Don't put rubber on linoleum floors--it will leave stains. Rubber-backed area rugs are a common culprit.
