Hemp is an all-natural plant material that is strong yet soft, and it can be made into rope, twine, fabric and paper. Necklaces made from hemp twine are earthy and hip, and are a fun accessory for both men and women to add to a casual jeans and t-shirt outfit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 108 inches of hemp twine, any thickness or color 8 beads Scissors Ruler
  1. Step 1

Measure out 3 strands of hemp twine 36 inches long.

  2. Step 2

Gather the strands together and tie them together in a simple overhand knot 6 inches down.

  3. Step 3

Untangle the strands, if necessary, and lay them out in front of you so that they are perpendicular to your body.

  4. Step 4

Pass the right strand over the middle stand.

  5. Step 5

Pass the left strand over the new middle strand.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this braiding pattern until you have created 2 inches of weaving.

  7. Step 7

Thread the current middle strand of hemp twine through one of the beads, and allow the left and right strands to lay on either side of it. If the hole in the bead is large enough to accommodate all three strands, you may thread them through, but you will have to tie a knot before and after the bead to keep it in place.

  8. Step 8

Continue the braiding pattern established in steps 4-5 to create another two inches of woven fabric, then thread on another bead as in step 7.

  9. Step 9

Repeat steps 4-8 until you have strung all 8 beads onto your necklace. Braid another 2 inches of fabric, and then tie off in another overhand knot.

  10. Step 10

Trim the loose ends to 6 inches. Discard or reuse whatever excess is left. Place the necklace around your neck and join the loose ends in a knot or bow.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can increase the thickness of this necklace by using more strands of hemp twine, so long as you increase it by multiples of 3 (6, 9, 12, etc.) to successfully complete the braiding pattern.
