How to Use an HP Scanner

HP scanners are now available with extremely high resolution settings. However, most every day uses do not require high resolution. Using the highest settings will result in long scanning times and extremely large file sizes. Fortunately, it doesn't take much time to learn how to use an HP scanner and the software that comes with it. The latest scanners come with a software package that helps to integrate your HP scanner with your HP digital camera and printer.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the HP Solution Center. Click Settings > Scan Settings > Button Settings at the bottom of the left pane.

    • 2

Click the Scan Picture Button tab. Under "Scan to" select the program you would like to edit the image with after the scan is finished. For example, if you would like the scanner to automatically open Photoshop whenever you scan an image, select Photoshop from the list. If you don't want to open a program immediately to edit your scan, select "Save to File." Then select the image file type. To save space, select *.jpg. For best image quality, select *.bmp. Under "Picture," select the type of image you are most likely to scan using this button.

    • 3

Repeat step 2 for the Scan Button, the Scan Document Button and Scan Film Button. Select the program you would like to use to open each type of scan, or select "Save to File" and the desired file type. Select your preferences under the Document or Picture menus based on the type of image or document you will scan most often using this button. Ensure that the "Show Preview" check box is checked for each button type. Click "OK."

    • 4

Place your document or picture on the glass. If scanning film, place the 35 mm negative or slide in the special adapter provided by HP. Select the Scan Picture, Document or Film button depending on what you are scanning. Select the Make Copies button to copy the document or picture directly. Click "Scan" and then "OK" to see the scan preview.

    • 5

Crop your image by clicking the small black boxes at the edges of the selection area. Drag your mouse until the portion of the image you wish to scan is selected. Select the image correction settings in the menu on the right to fix any problems with the picture or document. You may also change the image resolution and resize the image in these menus. When you're finished, click the "Accept" button. If you'd like to scan another image, select "Yes" in the next dialogue box. If not, select "No."

Tips & Warnings

  • For easier access, pin the HP Solution Center shortcut to your Start Menu. The HP Solution Center defaults to saving your scans in the My Scans folder. If you would like to place them in a different folder, select it in the "Save to File Save Options." When you use the Save to File option, files will not be saved until you close the scan preview window.
